I’ve always felt that the biggest problem with most HL2RPs is the heavy focus on CCA play or Resistance play. It feels like if you’re not apart of these two sides (or some sort of server-specific alternate) you’re stuck doing essentially nothing, waiting to become a casualty of either side’s actions. The centerpiece of a server should be focused around the Citizens, the largest pool of players, because if the citizens are an active group, the other factions will inevitably be given things to do, keeping all sides consistently generating role-playing opportunities.
The first thing that Progeny does to achieve this is to strip away a lot of the default HL2RP lore. By default HL2 is very oppressive at its core. You can still achieve this feeling of oppression and feeling of a bigger force controlling everything by taking more of a “1984” approach to the series (which the server is heavily inspired to). All citizens are encouraged to take a job, those who have yet to accumulate enough loyalty points are forced to work in factories, or other menial tasks. Those who have proven that they are beneficial members of society are given the option to work at tasks they may enjoy better. Prove to the Universal Union that you are a beneficial member of society, and you will be rewarded. Housing conditions, job selections, festivals and city wide events, become the face of City 24 by proving to your peers that hard work and loyalty will not go unnoticed.
The biggest lore change to the server is perhaps the way the Seven Hour War occured. When the Combine came to Earth, they came in a show of power. They demanded the surrender of every nation of Earth. Most nations did not surrender. These nations were quickly annihilated by the Combine’s overwhelming military superiority. However, those nations that did surrender, were left much, much better off. Nations such as Switzerland, now the home of City 24, perhaps one of the most prosperous cities on Earth.
The CWU have also been changed in the way they operate. CWU players are no longer cashiers and cafe workers. The CWU are entrusted with operating and managing different jobs that can then hire regular citizens to work it. These citizens must, of course, have accumulated enough loyalty points for this option. Now, CWU players own bars and hire employees, they can run radio shows, they can run television shows, host plays at the theater, run a newspaper stand, a bar, a restaurant, furniture stores, and many other options. All of these are, of course, with UU Approval and oversight.
The Universal Union see humans as a very important resource. Unlike many of the other races under Combine control, humans have an intriguing balance of both mobility and power. Having a steady stream of humans to add to the UU’s massive empire would be a benefits in anyone's eyes. The UU prefers to have a system where they can control human population. While humans are not allowed to reproduce by themselves, the UU does have systems in place to ensure a steady stream of humans are secured.
While C24 may seem like a paradise compared to other cities, it does have its problems. A growing resistance cell that seems to antagonize the city at every chance, an active and effective black market, making contraband easier and easier to obtain. Worse of all, some sort of alien disease, perhaps an aftermath of the Xen portals, have flooded many of the sewers and lower levels of the city. The diseases properties aren’t entirely understood, but its effects on the human body are disturbing, to say the least.
Despite all of this, City 24 thrives on. It is a city of opportunity and work. It’s the last frontier where a man can prove to his fellow man that the Human race is in fact worthy of the Universal Union’s boundless benefits. It is the future of mankind. Will you be a beneficial member of society?
- Server focused around the play of citizens, giving them tasks, jobs, events to join, clubs to participate in. All in all, we ensure the citizens can be just as active as the MPF or Resistance elements.
- Custom lore created to encourage interesting situations and new roleplay opportunities.
- Factions, such as the MPF, the CWU, the Resistance, Black Market, OTA, and an upcoming, custom faction have been carefully thought out with small, dynamic story lines that will force each faction into difficult choices that will shape what it means to be apart of them. These will test loyalties, push boundaries, and most importantly, create interesting and fun role-play.
- A background story that will effect all factions and individuals of City 24. Each faction will have to figure out how to take on this background threat.
- In and out of game databases to track all members of society.
- A unique battle system that allows players to take risks with a small safety net. This safety net however can be quickly lost, resulting in a PK.
